Full Job Description

Assistant Research Scientist, Grade 14: Bachelor’s degree in toxicology, environmental health sciences, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, epidemiology, immunology, industrial hygiene, pharmacology, or a related field, and one year of post-degree professional research experience in the appropriate field. Thirty graduate hours leading to an advanced degree in an appropriate field may be substituted for the required experience.


Research Scientist 1 (Toxic Substances), Grade 18: Bachelor’s degree in toxicology, environmental health sciences, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, epidemiology, immunology, industrial hygiene, pharmacology, or a related field, and two years of post-degree professional research experience in the appropriate field; OR a master’s degree in one of the above fields and one year of post-degree professional research experience in the appropriate field.

Preferred Qualifications: The preferred candidate will have experience with data management as well as evaluating and interpreting scientific data using statistical methods. It is preferred that the candidate have experience working with SAS or other statistical data analysis software and geographic information system (GIS) software. The preferred candidate will also have experience writing or contributing to scientific reports and peer-reviewed scientific papers, and refining complex scientific information to produce clear and concise summaries. Knowledge of contaminant fate and transport principles, a basic understanding of fisheries and aquatic ecology, experience with, or coursework in, human health risk assessment or toxicology, and experience with Excel, Microsoft Access, and Word are also preferred.

Duties Description

The Research Scientist will support the Department's Fish and Game Advisory Program by assessing health risks due to exposure to contaminants such as mercury in sportfish collected from New York State’s Great Lakes and other waters.

The incumbent will be responsible for fish contaminant concentration data management, statistical analysis, and interpretation for the purposes of developing human health risk-based regional and waterbody-specific advice for the public. Duties will include managing data in spreadsheets and databases; identifying and applying appropriate statistical methods using software such as SAS to identify regional and temporal patterns; contributing to data summaries and graphical representations to facilitate recommendations for human health risk management; assisting with the development of a data quality control/quality assurance plan; assisting with translation of findings and conclusions into public health messages; contributing to the preparation of technical reports/manuscripts, presentations, outreach and educational materials; and outreach to vulnerable communities and interaction with other State and federal agencies.

Additional Comments

Permanent, non-competitive, full-time, appointment. Appointment level will be determined based on the qualifications of the selected candidate. Occasional travel throughout New York State to areas not served by public transportation may be required (5%). Position Summary
The Parent Coordinator is part of the administrative team working under the supervision of the principal. The Parent Coordinator will engage with and involve parents in the school community by working with the principal, school staff, school leadership team, parent associations, community groups and parent advisory councils.
This position focuses on creating a welcoming environment for parents. The Parent Coordinator will identify parent and related school/community issues and work with the principal to see they are addressed in a timely manner.
Duties and Responsibilities

  • Increases parent involvement in the school by working closely with all school, parent and community organizations.
  • Serves as facilitator for parent and school community concerns and issues including, for example, school policies or facilities issues.
  • Conducts outreach to engage parents in their children’s education.
  • Convenes regular parent meetings and events around topics of key concerns to parents.
  • Attends parent meetings along with the principal, where appropriate.
  • Works with the school parent association, where needed, to provide assistance in establishing by-laws, holding elections and conducting their affairs in accordance with Chancellor’s Regulation A-660.
  • Serves as a school liaison to Central and Field-based parent support staff.
  • Maintains ongoing contact with community organizations that are involved with providing services to the school’s educational program.
  • Organizes back to school and other events to increase parental and community involvement and creates a welcoming school environment to parents.

Duties/Responsibilities
The Bilingual Instructional Coach:

  • Supports the work of teachers, teacher teams, and administrators in relation to bilingual instruction across a number of schools.
  • Models appropriate and innovative teaching methodologies through techniques such as team teaching, demonstrations, simulations and consultations.
  • Collaborates with principals and other school leaders to develop a vision in relation to bilingual programs; identifies concrete action steps to improve educational experiences for ELLs in bilingual programs; and identifies measurable outcomes for ELLs in the bilingual programs.
  • Collaborates with teams within the OML and other offices to ensure that high quality curriculum and instruction is implemented across content areas.
  • Collects data (quantitative and qualitative)—including but not limited to screening data for ELLs in bilingual programs, coaching logs, PL attendance and metrics, teachers’ instructional improvements, and more—to assess the impact of coaching to support and measure schools’ progress towards strengthening their bilingual programs.
